Solomon Northup - He was an American farmer, labourer, and musician whose experience of being kidnapped and sold into slavery was the basis for his book. Perhaps the best written of all the slave narratives, Twelve Years a Slave, is a harrowing memoir about one of the darkest periods in American history.
